What is Title I?
This program provides financial assistance to
schools with high percentages of poor children to help children meet
state academic standards. Its intent is to expand learning
opportunities while supplementing basic skill instruction in
reading/language and math. The following website provides
additional information. (http://www.ed.gov/programs/titleiparta/index.html).
Why is Shannon
Primary a Schoolwide Title I school?
Title I schools with percentages of low income
students of at least 40 percent may use Title I funds to operate a
"schoolwide program." Shannon Primary’s low income percentage is
79.88; therefore, we operate a schoolwide program.
What is the
purpose of the schoolwide planning team (SPT)?
The SPT is comprised of Licensed and
Non-Licensed Staff, Title I Staff, District Administrators, School
Administrators, Community Members, and Parents. The SPT must assess
the school’s instructional program and plan for its future with
respect to each of the 5 dimensions:
-
Student Achievement,
-
Curriculum and Instruction,
-
Professional Development,
-
Family & Community Involvement, and
-
School Context and Organization
How can the
money be spent?
Title I money must be utilized for materials,
personnel, and/or events which will directly improve student
achievement as well as for parental involvement.
What is a
schoolwide program?
Title I school programs must use instructional
strategies based on scientifically based research to ensure that
all students, particularly those who are low-achieving,
are proficient or advanced on state achievement standards. The
program must satisfy the requirements in each of the following
categories:
The schoolwide plan must be
developed by the schoolwide planning team. This team also serves as our parental
involvement committee.

Parent Involvement
Shannon Primary School monitors
the implementation of the Title I plan and welcomes input from
parents, school staff, and community members regarding its current
and future schoolwide plans. If you would like to make comments
regarding the plan or have questions, please contact Candace Moore,
Principal at 662-767-0135.
Parents are encouraged to become
partners in helping their children achieve and become actively
involved in all aspects of the process of the Title I program. A
strong connection between the home and the school is a key element
in student success. Materials, strategies, and help from teachers
are available to all parents within a Title I school. Opportunities
for active parent participation should include, but not be limited
to open house, school-parent compacts, parent-teacher organizations,
conferences, and monthly newsletters.

BE ADDRESSED THROUGH PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT EVENTS. |
How are parents involved?
Parents serving on the schoolwide planning team
are involved in all aspects of the schoolwide program plan including
the development and/or revision of the
Parental Promise and the
Commitment Compact. All parents are provided with an opportunity to
provide input during meetings, surveys, and other correspondence.
Furthermore, parents are provided with opportunities to attend
various school functions, parental involvement activities and
programs throughout the year. The purpose of such events is to
inform parents of their child’s achievement/progress and learn ways
to help their child with academics in the home setting. Parent
input regarding ideas, suggestions, etc.. are encouraged!
Curriculum & Academic Assessments:
Our school's curriculum is based on the MS Curriculum Frameworks
and the Lee County Schools Pacing Guide. Our reading textbook
series is published by Houghton Mifflin. Our math program is
Everyday Math. Additionally, we utilize a program called
Fundations to emphasize phonemic awareness and phonics.
Additionally, students participate in art, physical education, music
and computer.
As assessment tools, our district uses
Aimsweb, a universal screener. Aimsweb is administered to all
students K-2 at least 3 times each year (fall, winter, & spring).
Teachers also use the Lee County Schools common assessments, test
bank assessments, and teacher created assessments throughout the
year as means to determine whether students demonstrate individual
skills at the proficient, basic, or minimal level.
