Siggers High School Presentation

On February 28, 2022, State Representative Rickey Thompson of Shannon led a special presentation at Shannon Elementary School.

School librarian McCoy Scott was presented a framed copy of a resolution by the Mississippi House of Representatives that commemorates the historical Siggers High School. This was the first African-American high school in Shannon. Former students spoke about their time at the school during the presentation.

The group encouraged current students to learn all they can about this important local history and to appreciate the learning environment they enjoy today.

After the presentation, the group toured the grounds of their former school and the gymnasium where a new floor was recently installed.
Siggers High School was built during the mid-1900s as the first high school in the community dedicated exclusively to the secondary education of African-American students. The structure now houses Shannon Elementary School.
