Make-A-Wish Club raises $8,000

Members of the Make-A-Wish Club at Saltillo High School have raised $8,000 this school year and will get to grant a wish for a deserving child.

The president of the club, Elyse McKissick, presented the donation check to the Make-A-Wish Mid-South chapter on February 29. SHS club sponsor, Deanna Gable, says Elyse and the other students have worked diligently this year to reach their goal of being able to grant a child’s wish. The group raised the money through a variety of local fundraisers that included a coin drive/competition at the primary and elementary schools.

Lydia Miller with Make-A-Wish Mid-South says the recipient will be announced in the next few months. Miller says she is always amazed at how sometimes the smallest of groups can make such a huge impact. The Make-A-Wish organization was founded in 1980 to grant wishes for children with critical illnesses.

UPDATE:  4/29/24

Saltillo Primary School first grader Davis Duncan was all smiles when a wish of his was granted, thanks to the Saltillo High School Make-A-Wish Club. Davis is currently undergoing chemotherapy, and his wish was to go to VidCon in California in June. On Monday, the Make-A-Wish Club planned what everyone thought was a pep rally for the entire primary school. To the surprise of Davis, he instead learned that his wish had been granted. Family and friends of Davis were all there to share in his special day.
