head start information

Dear Families,

We understand how important early childhood education is to our families, and we want to keep you informed about the current situation regarding Pre-K classrooms in Lee County.

The Lee County School District partners with Mississippi Action for Progress (MAP) and other agencies to offer early learning opportunities through Head Start and our district’s Pre-K classrooms. While our district classrooms are currently full and many private daycare centers are at capacity, we know that many families have come to count on the availability of Head Start services across the county.

This year, MAP—our current Head Start provider—was required to reapply for federal Head Start funding through a competitive grant process. At this time, MAP has notified us that they are still awaiting official notification from the Office of Headstart regarding the outcome of this grant. Until MAP receives written confirmation, they are unable to proceed with registration, staffing, or classroom planning for the 2025–2026 school year.

We know this uncertainty is placing a burden on families, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and disruption this may cause. Unfortunately, this matter is beyond the control of Lee County Schools. We are committed to sharing updates with you as soon as we receive them.

If you have questions or would like more information, you may contact the Mississippi Head Start Association directly at 601-969-6979.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support of early childhood education in Lee County.

Sincerely,

Jodie Boyd, Director of Early Childhood

Coke Magee, Superintendent
